Gayo is located in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. On this large Indonesian island, Arabica coffee is grown mainly in the Gayo region, while the rest of Sumatra is largely dedicated to Robusta coffee or palm oil production. Farmers in Gayo typically manage small plots of 1 to 2 hectares, where coffee is grown under the shade of several tree species using agroforestry practices. The region’s high altitude, cool climate, fertile soils, and traditional terrace farming create ideal conditions for producing high-quality coffee.
